At the same time, gender identity can be relevant in healthcare because it can affect how people communicate with medical professionals and how they experience healthcare settings. Respectful communication can help patients feel comfortable providing accurate information about their concerns and medical history.

The distinction also matters in discussions about reproduction. Human reproduction depends on specific biological structures and reproductive functions. Terms such as ovaries, testes, sperm, eggs, uterus, and reproductive hormones describe physical biology rather than a person’s gender identity.

Gender identity, meanwhile, concerns how an individual understands and describes themselves. A person’s identity does not change the biological function of a particular organ, but identity can influence how that person wants to be addressed and understood socially.

It is also important to recognize that not every scientific question has a simple answer. Biological sex involves multiple characteristics rather than a single measurement.
